As a source of information about anything and everything, the power of the Internet is undeniable. Just type in your query and with one simple click, you instantly receive hundreds of pages related to your search. While the genie granted only 3 wishes, the Internet grants you unlimited wishes in terms of finding out what you want to know. Not all information is valuable knowledge, however. Unfortunately, the Internet has helped spread some information, which have sadly created some very dangerous trends.
One of these is “dry-scooping”, an extremely dangerous new fitness trend which is currently sweeping the Web. Dry-Scooping is a pre-workout trend that involves gym-goers eating powder supplements neat, instead of diluting them in water, as recommended by manufacturers. After a flurry of TikTok videos about it went viral, and received over 8 million likes in the process, health experts became very worried that impressionable young teens may try it. Their concerns have been proven valid. Despite them warning people not to try this “challenge”, it has so far landed at least one young woman in the hospital and caused another to stop breathing.
The person behind this new craze is believed to be a fitness influencer who suggested that dry scooping helped to maximize the effects of the amino acids, B vitamins, caffeine, creatine in the supplement he recommended to his followers. One such follower who tried dry-scooping according to his advice was 20-year-old Briatney Portillo, who was subsequently rushed to the hospital for heart attack symptoms soon after doing so.
Health experts believe that dry scooping delivers a massive jolt of caffeine to the body. This can quickly elevate your heart rate and blood pressure, essentially putting a huge strain on your heart. This can result in heart rhythm disturbances, which can be dangerous, even if you are otherwise very healthy. Apart from the heart-related risks, dry-scooping is also a major choking hazard. Taking a big scoop of a powdered substance without water greatly increases the immediate risk of you choking.
The huge irony of the dry-scooping craze is that it totally neglects the greatest “pre-workout” drink of them all: water! Water takes part of every single reaction in the human body. Staying hydrated all throughout the day is vital for optimal health. Whether or not you are training, make sure to have six to eight glasses of fluid every day.
